Henry Rinker

Henry Rinker was originally in the 11th New Jersey volunteer infantry. He transferred over to the New York 86th as Chaplain at the end of the war. Some of his letters to home were published in the book Memoirs of Civil War Chaplains- Union. He was a Presbyterian minister and teacher for much of his life.

Served from Sept 20, 1861 to Nov 13, 1862. September 6, 1862, the 40th regiment received by consolidation the enlisted men of the 87th Infantry, who were assigned principally to Companies E and F. (40th for 2 mts left for medical reasons) He then reenlisted in the NY 5th Cavalry Co C from Jan 4 1864 to July 19 1864. In the 5th Cavalry he also served with his father John B Rickert.

Am looking for other descendants of 86th infantry. Do you have any information of those years? Lansing took command after Colonel Higgins was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2nd 1863. I am looking for information on him prior to that date. He was wounded several times and survived the war.

The regiment was assigned to the 1st Brig. 3rd Div. 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac. engaged in duty in Washington till August 1862, Fredericksburg Dec. 12-15, 1862, Mud March Jan. 20-24, 1863, Chancellorville May 1-5, 1863, Gettysburg, PA July 1-3, 1863, Wapping Heights July 23, 1863, Kellys Ford Nov 7, 1863, Mine Run Campaign November to December 2, 1863. On December 30, 1863 Comrade Cobb was Honorably Discharged, reenlisted on December 31, 1863. Was in the battle of the Wilderness May 5-7, 1864, Spotsylvania May 8-21, 1864, North Anna River May 28, 1864, Totopotomoy May 31, 1864, Gaines Farm where he was captured on June 1, 1864 and confined to Andersonville prison for 11 months. The surrender of Lee and his Army April 9, 1865. Grand Review May 23, 1865 he was Honorably Discharged June 29, 1865 New York City, NY by reason of close of war.
